Smoking Is Bad For You. [13 Jun 2006|08:16pm]

Before someone insanely put a bullet into the head of DC's B-list superstar the Blue Beetle, he did some public information films. Here's one of them.

Best. Thread. EVER. [03 Jun 2006|07:01pm]

matthew_hyde
I've recently reacquainted myself with the DC Comics Message Boards after a long hiatus, and I stumbled across what has to be the greatest message board thread ever.

What Would Black Adam Do?

Okay, it probably makes more sense if you've read Infinite Crisis and 52, and if you're eager for some satire on DC's current direction. But hey, it's FUNNY!

Guess which bit it the coolest... [22 May 2006|06:56pm]

Okay, I know this is a bit of a geek out, and we don't get much of a sense of story from it, but this new trailer for Superman Returns looks really good...

"It's a bird!" "It's a plane!"

There have already been some rumblings among fanboys and girls about Kevin Spacey's portrayal of Lex Luthor being "too manic." Personally, I like it. Although it might not be 100% true to the Luthor of the comics, at the very least it's in keeping with Gene Hackman's version of "the greatest criminal mind of our time." (Of course, some people don't care for Hackman's Luthor, but I do.)

The real question is whether or not Brandon Routh can fill Christopher Reeve's shoes... or boots, if you will. Reeve was great because he could do both Superman and Clark Kent. Really, when you think about it, a pair of glasses isn't much of a disguise. However, Reeve played Kent as such a klutz, such an absolute nerd, that nobody in Metropolis would possibly believe that he was actually the big, blue Boy Scout. Unlike Michael Keaton's take on Batman (along with Val Kilmer and George Clooney), Reeve absolutely nailed the eponymous role.

And speaking of Metropolis, I love what I've seen of the sets so far. My biggest problem with the 1978 film was that Metropolis was pretty much just New York City (they even featured Supes flying past the Statue Of Liberty). It looks like this time around, Metropolis will be a real place (as real as Gotham City, anyway).

The film quality may not be great, but who cares, everyone wants to see Superman catch a plane....

Dissertation [19 Apr 2006|01:43pm]

sudge

Ok, I have to hand in a proposal for a dissertation by friday, and wouldnt mind some ideas. I know I want to do something on comics, but picking a topic is proving harder than I thought.

Ideas I've had are-

Comic books as modern myth - stories retold and changed, e.g. Origin stories. Morality stories...kinda thin to be honest

Morality in comic books - JLA/Authority comparisons, social and political commentaries in comics, Batman compared with the punisher type thing - both considered heroes, own sets of morality etc

social and political history of the 20th C through comics - WWII propaganda, comics code during cold war, the comics code in general, comics as social commentaty e.g. X-men and racism right through to Green lantern, the Ultimates etc

I'm dyin a death here, help me out!

Not quite as good as that Kevin Smith thing, but still chuckle-worthy.

"Superman can't fly." [10 Apr 2006|08:45pm]

matthew_hyde
I guess most of you will have seen this already, because I'm always late with this sort of thing, but I've come across this video of Kevin Smith taking about his experiences on the abortive Superman Lives project. It'll make you laugh. It'll make you cry. It'll make you buy a gun. And there's cussin'.

So to try and keep things tidy and easy to follow, we're going to make a new post every Sunday for anyone who would like to talk/review the comics they've got this week. We won't put much in the actual post, as you have probably noticed from this one, but be warned the comments may contain spoilers on various comics.

  • Infinite Crisis 6
  • Teen Titans 34
  • The Outsiders 35
  • Young Avengers 11
  • The OMAC Project Special
  • Absolute Hush
I'll try and keep it updated as much as I can.

Reviews [01 Apr 2006|01:45pm]

sudge
Hey guys, I was thinking that it might be a good idea to start a post just for reviews on comics or pretty much anything you've read or seen. I'll probably just do short reviews of my weekly comics, but this is really just for a review of anything you want. Got an old issue of Spiderman you thought was great, or needed work? Tell us why! And what did you think of V for vendetta? You get the picture ;)

I'll do my comic reviews as a comment just now, dont want to spoil anything for those who maybe havent read the comics and dont want them ruined.

The Dark Knight Vs. The Man Of Steel [29 Mar 2006|08:59am]

cheesegimp
This edition of Dinosaur Comics (and the comments that ensued in the LiveJournal feed) lead me to ask the question...

Who do you think would win in a fight: Batman or Superman?

Personally, I think it would go down exactly like it does in The Dark Knight Returns (or The Tower Of Babel storyline from JLA, if you prefer). Batman's greatest power is his mind. If he and Kal-El ever came to blows, Bruce Wayne would be prepared waaaay in advance. There's no way he'd ally himself with someone so powerful unless he had a contingency plan prepared just in case.

The way I see it, this is the ultimate What If.../Elseworlds battle. It's Nietzsche's wet dream: The Will To Power vs. The Übermensch. The unstoppable force vs. the immovable object.

But enough from me. Who do you think would win?

SPOILERS FOR SMALLVILLE 100 [27 Mar 2006|11:15pm]

sudge
Welcome to the "We Hate Lana Lang" club.

I apologise if this gets emotional, but I am pissed off!!

Let me get this straight - self righteous boring whiny lana gets to live....

But Badass-Supermans-dad Johnathan Kent has to die?

in the comics, lana was once a witch. And a Manhunter Sleeper agent. In the superman cartoon she was, lets face it, kinda slutty, and a supermodel. However, smallville Lana is the anti-lois. Not once would she even consider punching him on the arm. Of all the characters, she has shown the least growth, and most annoyance.

And she got to live over johnathan.

I hate her.

Questions, comments?
